SHARKS: THORNTON REMAINS FIRM, HE'S STAYING

Veteran center Joe Thornton reiterated his feelings about playing for the San Jose Sharks, telling the Toronto Sun he has no intention of waiving his no-trade clause. Rumors popped up all summer over the Sharks fielding calls for Thornton and teammate Patrick Marleau, who also has a no-trade clause.
Thornton, 35, wants to stay in San Jose and believes the Sharks have what it takes to compete for the Stanley Cup. <"I think we have a really good team that has a legitimate chance of doing something," Thornton told the Sun. "If I didn't think that, I don't think I'd still be here. But I still think we have a good group of guys and we can do something.
"You always hear the talk about teams inquiring and stuff, and the trade rumors. You hear your name in trade rumors. But I've never really thought about leaving at all. I always considered coming back.
"I know (Sharks GM Doug Wilson) always said we were going younger. But I always thought we still have some young guys, and that I can still help the young guys as much as I can. I think we have a really good team."
TFP reported numerous times during the off-season that while the Sharks were receiving calls, they never approached Thornton about the possibility of a move, something he confirmed to the Sun.
"(Wilson) never asked me to waive my no-trade (clause)," he said.
Thornton reaffirmed his plan to "finish my career as a Shark," even if other teams try to pluck him away from California.
"It's flattering, sure, that other teams would want to trade assets to acquire me, for sure," he said. "It's just like any employee who works for Ford and GM wants you. It's flattering. That's the way I look at it."

Leafs : Time is now for Holland to prove he belongs with Leafs

The story of Jonathan Cheechoo is one that offers caution to the 23-year-old centre plugging the Maple Leafs third line. Now playing for Moscow Dynamo, Cheechoo led the NHL with an astounding 56 goals as a 25-year-old with the Sharks and was gone from the league entirely less than five years later.

"It's a funny game that way," says Peter Holland, far from making it himself just yet.
"They say one of the hardest things to do is to get to the NHL, but it's even harder to stay here. If there is that opportunity where I can say I've made it, who knows maybe I'll be 38 years old."

Anaheim spring for the Caledon, Ontario-born Holland, who rung up 67 points in 68 games that year with Guelph.

Five years down the line and now 80 games into his NHL career, Holland is in the earliest stages of securing his place in a league that will chews up those that can't stick quickly and banishes them elsewhere.

He was an up-and-down type for the Leafs last year – his first in Toronto – bouncing between the NHL and AHL with varying degrees of success (he had a dominant playoff with the Marlies), but it's now, with opportunity at hand, that he needs to show why he belongs in the league.

Holland has moved up in the lineup and is drawing bigger minutes with Joffrey Lupul sidelined – including a season-high of more than 16 minutes over the weekend. He's also added power-play duty in Lupul's absence and is killing penalties for the first time since those junior days with the Storm.
Simply put, his opportunity has never been better to show how and why he belongs.

"We know what Peter can do," said Leafs assistant and former Marlies coach Steve Spott. "Obviously I saw it firsthand in the American Hockey League last year. I thought he was the best player in the American League last year. And now he's starting to find that here. He's playing on the power-play now with [Kadri], he's killing penalties and his minutes are going up."

He's also slowly earning the sometimes difficult faith of head coach Randy Carlyle. That wasn't the case often a year ago – Holland's minutes were often overtaken by the veteran hand of Jay McClement.

"That's a real big word for coaches is trust and I think Pete's now got that from Randy," Spott said.

"Now he's got to keep it."

In doing so, Spott says, Holland needs to be responsible with the puck and without it. And for young players that can be a challenge. It was Holland's ill-timed drop pass to Jake Gardiner behind the Toronto goal Tuesday night that precipitated Gardiner's error and the Coyotes first goal.
With trust from the coach, however, Holland admits to feeling more confident, more willing to hang onto the puck and try to make a play from time to time.

He knows he needs to become more difficult for opponents to play against, more refined and aware "away from the biscuit", more disruptive on the forecheck, and far better in the faceoff circle.
"My game is having the puck, making plays with the puck," said Holland. "I don't make too many mistakes when I do have the puck, but it's a matter of putting myself in position to have it more."

Holland has just three points in 12 games this fall – including the game-winning goal over Chicago on Saturday – and poor possession numbers, but some of that has to be attributed to the sparse minutes he drew early on Toronto's fourth line.

Since moving into the third unit centre gig – alongside Leo Komarov and Mike Santorelli – those possession stats have improved and he's become a much more noticeable presence on the ice, using the size, speed and skill that made him a first round pick.

And that has to become the norm for him to succeed.

Though he boasts a new two-year deal and can't go down to the Marlies again without waivers – thereby keeping him in the NHL barring some unforeseen drop-off – Holland still must determine what kind of player he can be for the Leafs, establish himself as a piece of their future.

He looks enviously at Bruins all-around ace David Krejci and sees a model to follow. "I look at a guy like that and think that's something I want to strive towards," Holland said.

He sees a player in Krejci that Claude Julien and the Bruins count on across the board, someone who rose up the ranks of a depth chart to become the leading scorer of a Stanley Cup champ. "I want to be a guy that can be counted on in all situations," he says, "whether we're down a goal in the last couple minutes [and] I need to be put there to get one for us. Or if we're up a goal, be trusted to shut the other team down. It's something that you just need to keep building towards."

Holland was one of those players in the desert on Tuesday.

He was there on the Gila River Arena ice in the final minute of the third period with the Leafs pushing for one more goal – they wouldn't get it, falling 3-2 to Arizona.

That's what he wants, but it's also what he has to earn. And that's a process he's only just beginning.

"I don't know if you can ever really take your foot off the gas pedal," Holland said. "It's a funny game in the sense that if you go on a bit of a slide, next thing you know they bring in the next better kid. There's always kids up and coming trying to take your spot."

Choix : J'ai choisi 3 buts pour le Canadien, car le résultat du tirage pour les Rangers a été deux fois 1 but. Donc, la sélection ne fut pas trop difficile c'est aussi simple que ça.

Tirage TIRS : MTL (30 et 23) / NYR (27 et 35)

Choix : Cela fut assez simple, le Canadien connait très rarement des matchs de moins de 25 tirs donc, le choix de 30 était logique. Pour les Rangers, le choix de 27 était a considéré, car je ne pas que le Ch va accordé plus de 30 tirs dans ce match, par contre les Rangers compte sur de bons joueurs offensifs donc cela pourrait être plus haut que 27.

Tirage 1er BUT : MTL (Diaz et Cole) / CAR (Ansimov et Fedotenko)

Choix : Pour le premier marquer du Canadien, choisir entre Cole ou Diaz la question ne ce pose pas, les chances de Cole sont plus haute que Diaz, mais je crois que Diaz a déjà un premier but a son actif si je me trompe pas. Pour les Rangers, Anisimov semble un joueur qui fait des passes plus que des buts surtout avec un total de 1 but et 9 passes donc j'ai opté pour Fedotenko.

Choix : Pour le Canadien, cela fut assez facile, car j'ai obtenu deux fois le résultat de 3. Pour la Caroline, c'est temps si le CH n'accorde pas beaucoup de buts donc et le fait que Cole pourrait mettre de l'argent en jeux pour le match pour tenter de motiver les troupes. Je crois que Price sera solide ce soir (comme à tous les soirs ou presque).

Tirage TIRS : MTL (21 et 31) / CAR (31 et 24)

Choix : L'équipe de Montréal fera une bonne performance et ils pourront tirer plus souvent au but, car la défensive de la Caroline n'est pas reconnue pour être très fermée (moyenne de 32,9 tirs accordés par match). La Caroline peut compter sur quelques joueurs de talent pour marquer et surtout tiré au filet, mais le manquent de bons défenseurs pour Montréal leurs permettra de pouvoir tiré plus souvent.

Tirage 1er BUT : MTL (Gill et Moen) / CAR (Ruutu et Staal)

Choix : J'ai pris Moen pour la simple raison que Gill marque un but par année, par contre Moen a plus de chance et il connait un bon début de saison et il est impliqué souvent dans des chances de marquer, mais ne les concrétise pas. J'ai choisi Ruutu, à cause de son total de 7 buts depuis le début de l'année et Staal sera dérangé mentalement, car Cole sera son rival.

Choix : Pour le Canadien, le choix ne fut pas trop difficile, car le résultat a donné deux fois un but. Pour les Sabres, j'ai sélectionné 3 buts, car 5 aurait été trop élevé a mon avis, car les Sabres vont surement resserré leur jeu après une défaite ou qu'il ont accordé beaucoup de buts et ont peut dire que le Ch ne joue pas mal depuis au moins trois matchs au niveau défensif.

Tirage TIRS : MTL (21 et 30) / BUF (18 et 23)

Choix : L'équipe de Montréal connaîtra un bon match offensif globalement et ils auront beaucoup de chances de marquer, mais ils se buteront à un Miller en grande forme (en considérant qu'il est le partant). Les Sabres sont une équipe qui tire assez souvent 30,7 de moyenne par match et le meilleur résultat a été 23.

Tirage 1er BUT : MTL (Cammalleri et Diaz) / BUF (Roy et Pominville)

Choix : J'ai choisi Cammalleri et en plus je dis qu'il marquera son 4e but de la saison en avantage numérique et surtout qu'il est dû pour connaitre un bon match. Pour Buffalo j'ai pris Derek Roy pour la seule raison que c'est le centre numéro un de l'équipe et qu'il est impliqué dans plus de situations et simplement que je vois plus lui que Pominville pour marquer le fameux 1er but.

Choix : J'ai pris 4 buts pour Montréal, car l'équipe est due pour connaitre un gros match offensif et avec le retour de Gomez cela fera une différence (je blague). Pour Nashville, cela est simple j'ai pris le 5, car Nashville compte quelques anciens joueurs du CH et que l'équipe est bien équilibrée et surtout que le match sera offensif dans les deux sens.

Tirage TIRS : MTL (27 et 32) / NSH (41 et 22)

Choix : J'ai sélectionné 32 pour le CH parce que l'équipe en nombre de tirs atteint souvent le plateau des 25 tirs et plus par partie. Pour ce qui est de Nashville, du au fait que je leur accorde 5 buts le choix de 41 a été plus logique que celui de 22 (sinon 22 aurait dit que Budaj est vraiment mauvais).

Tirage 1er BUT : MTL (Subban et Diaz) / NSH (Suter et Halischuk)

Choix : Pour le Canadien j'ai choisi Subban car logiquement il doit marquer un jour et cela ce fera ce soir, si c'est pas le premier but il en fera un j'ai suis sur! Pour Nashville, en Suter (défenseur) et Halischuk (attaquant) le choix ne fut difficile, car Suter joue sur l'avantage numérique et il a 3 buts au total tandis que Halischuk a 4 buts et semble joué à 5 contre 5.
